As humanity confronts climate change and unprecedented environmental challenges, we must prepare a diverse generation of science- and conservation-minded leaders equipped to develop innovative, lasting solutions.

Women represent 58% of the U.S. professional workforce, yet just 35% of the STEM workforce, reflecting persistent barriers that limit who enters and advances in science.

Launched in 2016, Earthwatch Institute’s Girls in Science program helps young women overcome these barriers by immersing them in field-based conservation research, environmental learning, technical skill-building, and career mentorship from women scientists. Through hands-on scientific research, participants build the knowledge, confidence, and skills to pursue STEM pathways while developing a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges they will help solve.

Girls in Science prioritizes access to students who face socioeconomic barriers: 95% of alumnae attended Title I schools, were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and/or were first-generation college students.
